News > Two Cyclones Hit Australia
Two tropical cyclones hit Australia in February; Cyclone Marcia, a category 5 cyclone at its peak, hit the Queensland, whilst Cyclone Lam hit a remote area of the Northern Territory.
Three-hundred and fifty homes were left uninhabitable in Queensland in the Wake of Cyclone Marcia. Several towns were left without water and power and hundreds of homes were damaged by strong winds and the subsequent flood waters.
The heavy rain from the cyclone elevated Central Queensland’s Callide Dam’s level to 90% which triggered the automatic gates to open. According to local authorities, the intensity of the rainfall was unprecedented and upstream waters to rose by over seven metres in 3 hours.
