Where? British Geological Survey Open Day

When? Saturday 27 June, 10am-4pm

What?

Staff from British Antarctic Survey (BAS) will showcase its work at this year’s British Geological Survey (BGS) Open Day on Saturday 27 June in Keyworth, Nottingham.

At ‘Discover Antarctica’ family visitors can experience the ‘sights and sounds of Antarctic space weather’ including the dazzling Aurora Australis and explore like a polar explorer by entering a deep field Antarctic field camp with pyramid tent, sleeping equipment, clothing and food. Fossils on display will show that Antarctica was once a tropical rainforest occupied by dinosaurs and there will be a chance to see some of the marine crustaceans that live in the seas around Antarctica plus measure up against a penguin. Prizes will be up for grabs for the best Antarctic drawings and a talk entitled ‘What Antarctica can tell us about Planet Earth’ is aimed at a family audience age 7+.

British Antarctic Survey space weather scientist, Dr Nigel Meredith, who’ll be on hand at the open day says, “We are excited to be participating at the BGS Open Day this year and to show the public how Antarctica is so important for understanding Earth. Visitors can listen to the radio waves from space above Antarctica, experience an auroral display, get the latest space weather forecast and lots more.”

The BGS Open Day forms part of NERC’s Summer of Science as part of its 50th anniversary this year. Find out more
